History of Moissanite & Lab Grown Diamonds
Moissanite is a rare mineral that was first discovered in 1893 by Dr. Henri Moissan at a meteorite crash site in Arizona. Initially, he thought the crystals were diamonds, but later identified them as silicon carbide. Today, most Moissanite is created in a lab, making it an affordable and eco-friendly alternative to diamonds.
Lab-grown diamonds, also known as synthetic diamonds, are created in laboratories using advanced technology. They have the same optical, physical, and chemical properties as natural diamonds, but are more affordable and environmentally friendly.
The history of Moissanite and Lab-grown diamonds is fascinating and shows how technology has advanced to create beautiful and sustainable alternatives to traditional gemstones. Whether you’re looking for an engagement ring or a special piece of jewelry, Moissanite and Lab-grown diamonds are excellent options to consider.
Moissanite | Lab Grown Diamond vs Natural Diamonds
Moissanite and lab-grown diamonds are both alternatives to natural diamonds that can look similar to an untrained eye. However, they have different compositions: moissanite is made from silicon carbide, while lab-grown diamonds are made from carbon. Moissanite is more affordable than lab-grown diamonds, but also less hard. Moissanite has more fire and dispersion, which creates more sparkle, but also a yellowish-greyish tint. Lab-grown diamonds have more clarity and refractive properties, but also a yellowish-blueish tint in lower grades. Neither moissanite nor lab-grown diamonds are as valuable as natural diamonds, which are rare.
Lab grown diamonds are chemically and structurally the same as natural diamonds, except they are man-made using highly specialized technology, equipment and responsibly sourced raw materials. Made from the silicon carbide, moissanite is often used as a diamond alternative due to its durability, sparkle and affordability.
All Moissanite stones used in jewelry are now lab-grown. The biggest difference in their appearance compared to natural and lab-grown diamonds is that the majority of Moissanite stones used in jewelry now have a color that resembles the K Grade color in diamond color grading.
